The Idea of the Holy
A Philosophical Exploration of the Sacred
The concept of the holy is one of the most fundamental and enduring in human history. It is found in every culture and every religion, and it has played a major role in shaping our understanding of the world and our place in it.
In this book, philosopher Rudolf Otto explores the idea of the holy in depth, drawing on a wide range of sources from philosophy, psychology, and religion. He argues that the holy is not simply a subjective experience, but rather an objective reality that is distinct from the natural world.

Otto identifies three main elements of the holy: mysterium tremendum, majestas, and fascinans. Mysterium tremendum is the sense of awe and dread that we feel in the presence of the holy. Majestas is the sense of overwhelming power and authority that we feel in the presence of the holy. And fascinans is the sense of irresistible attraction that we feel to the holy.
Otto argues that these three elements are essential to the experience of the holy. They are what make the holy distinct from the natural world and what give it its unique power and significance.
The Idea of the Holy is a classic work of philosophy that has had a profound influence on our understanding of the holy. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the philosophy of religion, the psychology of religion, or the cultural history of religion.
